What is Toncoin (TON)?
TON is the native currency of the layer-1 Toncoin blockchain developed by the Telegram messaging platform. It was renamed from ‘Telegram Open Network’ to ‘The Open Network’ when the TON Foundation took it over from Telegram. Being a Proof-of-Stake (PoS) consensus network, Validator maintains the security of the Toncoin network. Anyone willing to become a validator in the Toncoin network can become one by acquiring enough TON. The minimum number of TON coins required to participate in the network consensus is 50 TON coins.
Toncoin network provides a fast and secure transaction facility at minimal gas fees through its sharding-based structure of multiple layers. It also allows developers to create scalable dApps with user-friendly interfaces. TON offers a built-in wallet function with both custodial and non-custodial services. It gives the facility of accessing the TON blockchain via decentralized VPNs to its clients.
TON coin powers the complete PoS mechanism of Toncoin. It makes its owners eligible to become the network validator and earn rewards. Paying the gas fee applicable by the Ton platform to deploy smart contracts or process transactions is also possible through TON coins. The capped limit for the TON coin is 5 billion.
