What is Theta Network (THETA)?
THETA is the native cryptocurrency of Theta Network, a blockchain-powered network built to enable peer-to-peer decentralized video streaming services. The Theta network operates through a pool of users who offer their spare bandwidth and computing resources to stream videos. As the number of users joining the Theta network increases, it gets more bandwidth to improve the video streaming quality. Moreover, Theta Network also facilitates the development of dApps on top of its blockchain.
THETA is the governance token of the Theta Network. Those who stake it become validators and Guardian nodes. While validator nodes stake THETA tokens to get the right to process transactions of the Theta Network, Guardian nodes ensure that the transaction blocks proposed by validator nodes are accurate. THETA token also gives voting rights to its owners for casting their votes on the upcoming proposals associated with the Theta Network. The total supply of THETA tokens is 1 billion.
Apart from THETA, the network also has a ‘gas token’ called TFUEL. The Theta network participants who share bandwidth and resources to stream videos get paid in the TFUEL token. Those who stake the THETA token also get TFUEL tokens as a reward.
Theta Network uses a new form of the Proof-of-Stake consensus mechanism called Multi-Level BFT that utilizes a small set of nodes to produce blocks and a much larger group of Guardian nodes to finalize the network blockchain at regular intervals.
