What is Cryptojacking?
Have you ever heard about hijacking an aircraft or bus? BOOOO! It sounds scary. This nerve-racking act is not only associated with meatspace but also with cyberspace. The word cryptojacking is made by combining two words "Crypto + Hijacking." It is a type of cyber hijacking where the hacker secretly seizes the computing devices of the targets and performs crypto mining illicitly.
How does Cryptojacking work?
This is done through sharing malicious links with people, on email or by infecting other resources on the web through a malicious code. Whenever the victim clicks on the link, the code triggers in the background of the hacked computer without the victim's knowledge. This way, the cryptojacker takes control of the infected device and saves the mining cost.
How to Detect Cryptojacking?
Below are a few techniques through which one can detect cryptojacking.
Overheating of the Computing Device: Since this act involves suspiciously hijacking devices for an intensive mining process, overheating is the immediate impact a computer device can exhibit. This can lead to a short life span of the computer. To check for overheating, compare your device's functions and applications with your fan speed. If the fan is running faster than ongoing usage, then you should consult a security expert because there are strong chances of heavy software working in the background.
Lack of Performance: If your computer is running slow, that might signal a security attack. Monitor your CPU usage and device performance regularly. Detection of abnormal usage needs to be prioritized, and additional measures like a good cybersecurity program and ad blockers can be beneficial to prevent massive loss.
To protect yourself from the attack mentioned above, update your system and install antivirus malware. Although cryptojacking does not harm other resources of a computer, you should be attentive enough to recognize the illicit crimes and activities possessing your device.
