What is Optimism (OP)?
OP is the native token of Optimism, a layer-2 blockchain built as a low-cost scaling solution for Ethereum. It is EVM compatible, which allows the scaling of Ethereum apps without any complications and makes them work at a fraction of the cost. The key component of Optimism that makes it scalable is the Optimistic rollup.
As the name suggests, Optimistic roll-ups work on the “optimistic” thinking that all transactions are valid. They are called “roll-ups” because the blockchain rolls-up multiple transactions into one transaction and sends it to its parent blockchain. An optimistic rollup derives security from the parent chain for verifying transactions. The parent chain in the case of the Optimism blockchain is Ethereum. Once the Optimism blockchain submits a rollup batch of its transactions to Ethereum, a time window starts during which anyone can challenge those transactions through a fraud-proof. If no one challenges the rollup, the Ethereum blockchain considers it valid and accepts it. The roll-up approach of multiple transactions into one dramatically lowers the gas fee charged by the network and boosts the processing speed.
The OP token of the Optimism blockchain governs its complete ecosystem. Its holders can participate in governance matters of Optimism. OP tokens have also been used as an airdrop reward for the early users of Optimism.
The First airdrop of OP tokens took place in May 2022 for early users of Optimism. Nearly 231000 addresses were declared eligible to claim airdrops of 214 million OP tokens (5% of maximum OP supply) at that time. The upcoming airdrops of OP tokens will be 14% of OP supply.
