What is Nervos Network (CKB)?
The Nervos Network is a multi-layer network of protocols where each layer does a specified function and together offer an integrated solution for building scalable universal dApps and smart contracts. The base layer (layer-1) of the Nervos network is the Common Knowledge Base layer, of which CKB (CKBytes) is the native token. Owning 1 CKB in the Common knowledge base layer means owning one byte of storage space in it. The term “Common knowledge” refers to a verified state by global consensus in the Nervos Network.
While the base layer of Nervos Network operates on a Proof-of-Work (PoW) consensus and focuses on security and decentralization; the other blockchain layers on the platform use Proof-of-Stake (PoS) consensus and look after the performance and scalability. Users can deploy Smart contracts and dApps on any layer.
The Nervos platform uses CKB tokens as its medium of exchange. It collects transaction fees in CKB tokens and rewards network validators in CKB tokens. The holders of CKB tokens get to earn more CKB by locking their holdings for some specific time frames. Operating any dApps and smart contracts on the Nervos network needs the developers to pay some fee in CKB tokens. Lastly, CKB tokens also allow their holders to purchase storage space of cells in the base layer of the Nervos Network.
