What is NEAR Protocol (NEAR)?
NEAR is the native currency of the NEAR Protocol, a sharded Layer-1 Proof-of-Stake protocol for hosting DApps. NEAR Protocol strives to compete with similar blockchain platforms like Ethereum, EOS, and Polkadot. It aims to do so by providing increased scalability by implementing a sharding variation called Nightshade in its native blockchain. This approach divides the transaction processing work across many participating nodes so the network can process more transactions simultaneously. Moreover, NEAR uses a unique block generation scheme called Doomslug that allows NEAR to achieve finality faster with just one round of confirmation.
NEAR Protocol also facilitates interoperability between different blockchains through the Rainbow Bridge and a layer-2 solution called Aurora. Through it, the NEAR users can transfer ERC-20 tokens from Ethereum to NEAR for higher scalability and throughput.
NEAR tokens act as the mode of payment for all services provided by NEAR protocol. It includes paying transaction fees and storage fees imposed by NEAR Protocol. The participants of the NEAR protocol can also stake NEAR tokens to contribute to network consensus as a validator. NEAR token has a maximum supply of 1 Billion.
