About Kusama (KSM)
Kusama is a blockchain platform that provides an experimental environment to developers for building highly scalable and interoperable sharded blockchains. Developers can test and experiment with new blockchains and dApps on Kusama before releasing them on the Polkadot network with some additional features which are not available on Polkadot, and for this reason, it is also known as a “Canary Network” of Polkadot.
The specialized blockchains on Kusama are called Parachains which together form the interconnected network mainly used for testing new blockchains and dApps. Even the recent upgrades of Polkadot are often first tested on Kusama prior to their launch because Kusama has nearly the same codebase as the Polkadot.
KSM is the native token of the Kusama platform. Its holders can take part in the validation and governance process of the Kusama network through the Nominated Proof of Stake (NPoS) consensus mechanism. They can become the validator or a nominator (who stakes their tokens for a specific validator) to verify the network data and vote on the proposed changes.
